INSTALLATION AND STARTUP GUIDE for the
OWL PERSONAL PORTFOLIO MANAGER
VERSION 6
Copyright 1993-1994 All rights Reserved
This guide covers installation and startup of OWL Personal Portfolio
Manager (OPPM) Version 6.x. The complete User's Guide is built into
the program and is accessed by selecting the "USER'S GUIDE" option.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
OPPM requires a minimum of 640K of memory (512K free conventional
memory), a hard disk and a graphics monitor (CGA, EGA, VGA or
Hercules).
DOS CONFIGURATION
OPPM requires that the number of DOS file handles be set to 27 or
more. The number of DOS file handles is established when you boot
your computer and is derived from the standard file "CONFIG.SYS".
For proper operation, you MUST HAVE the file "CONFIG.SYS" in the
root directory of your start-up disk and it MUST contain the line
"FILES=27" (values above 27 are acceptable).
Once you have added or edited the "CONFIG.SYS" file, you must reboot
your computer for the changes to take effect. Consult your DOS manual
for additional information.
UPGRADING FROM EARLIER VERSIONS
OPPM version 6 is fully compatible with data from OPPM 3.0 and
above. Before installing Version 6, run your existing version and
select the "BACKUP" option to create a backup copy of your data
files. Be sure that the backup floppy disk contains files: FOL.BAK,
SEC.BAK, INC.BAK, AL.BAK, PRICE.BAK and PUR.BAK before proceeding with
installation. On some earlier versions of OPPM, you may have file
INC.DBF instead of INC.BAK on your backup floppy disk. If this is the
case, rename file INC.DBF to INC.BAK on the backup disk. Example:
A>REN INC.DBF INC.BAK
When you have completed the installation, run version 6 and select the
"RESTORE" option. This will install copies of your data files for
use with with the new version. You may also copy your files to the
new version manually. Copy files FOL.DBF, SEC.DBF, INC.DBF, AL.DBF,
PRICE.DBF and PUR.DBF from their former location to the \OPPM6
subdirectory. Example:
CD \OPPM6
COPY C:\OPPM5\FOL.DBF
Repeat the copy command for each of the other 5 files (do not copy
*.dbf). After coping the files, run OPPM and select the "REINDEX"
option.
INSTALLATION
The following files are needed to install the OWL Personal Portfolio
Manager: OPPM_EXE.EXE, OPPM_DAT.EXE, ORDER.DOC, README.1ST, and
INSTALL.BAT.
To install, upgrade or reinstall OPPM, type the following commands.
A: if you are not installing from drive A substitute
the appropriate drive letter for "A".
CD \pathname where "pathname" is the directory where the distri-
bution files are located. If you are installing
from a floppy drive this will probably be the root
directory i.e.("CD \"). If you downloaded the files
this might be something like "CD \comm\downloads"
INSTALL d where "d" is the hard disk drive where you want to
install the program ("INSTALL C" installs the
program on the C drive).
OPPM will be installed in subdirectory "\OPPM6" of the designated
hard disk drive.
IMPORTANT: If you are reinstalling OPPM or upgrading from an earlier
version of OPPM that was installed in the \OPPM6 subdirectory, special
instructions will be displayed. The instructions tell you what keys
to press to install OPPM without overwriting your existing data files.
RUNNING THE PROGRAM
To run the OWL Personal Portfolio Manager type the following commands:
C:
CD \OPPM6
OPPM
If you installed the program on a hard drive other than C, substitute
the appropriate drive letter for "C" in the first line above.
The data files shipped with the program contain sample data which is
provided to help you become familiar with the various options and
capabilities of OPPM. The sample data covers October 1992 through
September 1994.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
The following is a brief list of errors that may be encountered and
what to do about them.
Out of Memory or Low Memory: You don't have enough memory below 640K
to run the program. If your computer has at least 512K of RAM, you
should be able to eliminate this problem by removing memory resident
programs (TSR'S) and device drivers (mouse drivers, network drivers,
etc.) to free up memory.
Program Aborts with Message (DOS error 04): This means that insufficient
DOS file handles have been specified. If you have already added the line
FILES=27 to your CONFIG.SYS file AND rebooted your computer, try
increasing the number a few at a time. Reboot your computer each time
you increase the number.
Program Locks up or screen becomes distorted: The mouse display software
in OPPM can cause problems with some displays. Adding switches to the
command line that cause OPPM to use a non-graphic mouse cursor can
sometimes solve this problem. Try running OPPM with the following
command:
OPPM /nv /ng
Mouse doesn't work: Your mouse driver is probably quite old and out
of date. Contact your mouse vendor for an updated driver.
Other Errors: If at any time you are unable to resolve a problem with
this program, call or write us a letter explaining the nature of the
problem. Please also include a description of your computer configuration
including any TSR programs which are installed.
